Learn About Diagnosis

Parkinsonian syndromes (PS) and essential tremor (ET) share some symptoms, which is why it can sometimes be difficult for certain patients to get an accurate diagnosis. Physicians typically diagnose the diseases by asking patients about their symptoms, watching them move, and by observing the type of tremor they have. However, these signs and symptoms can be extremely variable.

The earlier you start the right treatment for a movement disorder, the sooner you may start to feel better. An accurate diagnosis is crucial to receiving the right treatment.

The following sections describe in detail how PS and ET movement disorders are diagnosed.
